ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
James Blew serves as the assistant secretary for planning, evaluation, and policy development at the U.S. Department of Education. He was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on July 17, 2018. Prior to joining the Department, he served as director of the 50CAN affiliate Student Success California, national president of StudentsFirst, and national director of the Alliance for School Choice and its predecessor, the American Education Reform Council.
Eric Hanushek is the Paul and Jean Hanna Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution. A leader in the economic analysis of educational issues, his research spans the impact on achievement of teacher quality, accountability, and class-size reduction. He pioneered measuring teacher quality on the basis of student achievement.

Each session will include thoughtful and informed analysis from our top scholars.
FEATURING
Niall Ferguson, MA, D.Phil., is the Milbank Family Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University, and a senior fellow of the Center for European Studies, Harvard, where he served for twelve years as the Laurence A. Tisch Professor of History.
Victor Davis Hanson is the Martin and Illie Anderson Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution; his focus is classics and military history.

Hoover Institution Director Condoleezza Rice and Lord Chris Patten engage in a wide-ranging discussion about China's deepening authoritarianism, its escalating assault on Hong Kong's freedom and way of life, and the challenge that China's intensifying assertion of "sharp power" poses to democracies worldwide.
ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
Condoleezza Rice is the Tad and Dianne Taube Director of the Hoover Institution and the Thomas and Barbara Stephenson Senior Fellow on Public Policy. In addition, she is a founding partner of Rice, Hadley, Gates & Manuel LLC, an international strategic consulting firm. Rice served as the sixty-sixth secretary of state of the United States (2005-2009) and as President George W. Bush’s national security adviser (2001 to 2005).
Lord Chris Patten is chancellor of the University of Oxford. During a career in government, he was chairman of the Conservative Party (1990-92), the United Kingdom’s last governor of Hong Kong (1992-97), European Commissioner for External Relations (1999-2004), and chairman of the BBC Trust (2011-2014). He chaired the International Crisis Group (2004-11), and is a commander of France’s Legion of Honor (2016). Lord Patten is the author of several books, including most recently First Confession: A Sort of Memoir (2017).

In this second episode of Battlegrounds, H.R. McMaster and Ambassador Ahn discuss the daunting challenges South Korea faces with North Korea’s nuclear and missile ambitions and China’s political and economic aggression. South Korea’s relationship with Japan is increasingly strained due to historical grievances as South Korea-U.S. relations are complicated due to anti-alliance sentiment among a vocal minority of South Koreans as well as demands from American leaders that South Korea share more of the defense burden.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
Ho-Young Ahn is President of University of North Korean Studies. From 2013 to 2017, he was South Korea’s Ambassador to the U.S. and prior to that served as First Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
H. R. McMaster is the Fouad and Michelle Ajami Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University. He is also the Bernard and Susan Liautaud Fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute and lecturer at Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business. He was the 26th assistant to the president for National Security Affairs. Upon graduation from the United States Military Academy in 1984, McMaster served as a commissioned officer in the United States Army for thirty-four years before retiring as a Lieutenant General in June 2018.

Terry L. Anderson has been a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution since 1998 and is currently the John and Jean De Nault Senior Fellow. He is the past president of the Property and Environment Research Center in Bozeman, MT, and a Professor Emeritus at Montana State University where he won many teaching awards during his 25 year career.
Stephen Haber is the Peter and Helen Bing Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution and the A.A. and Jeanne Welch Milligan Professor in the School of Humanities and Sciences at Stanford University. In addition, he is a professor of political science, professor of history, and professor of economics (by courtesy), as well as a senior fellow of both the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research and the Stanford Center for International Development.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
Senator Josh Hawley was elected to the United States Senate in 2018. He is recognized as one of the nation’s leading constitutional lawyers. The youngest Senator in America, Senator Hawley serves on the following Senate Committees: Judiciary, Armed Services, Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, Small Business and Entrepreneurship, and the Special Committee on Aging.
Lanhee Chen is the David and Diane Steffy Fellow in American Public Policy Studies at the Hoover Institution, and Director of Domestic Policy Studies in the Public Policy Program at Stanford. In 2012, he was policy director of the Romney-Ryan campaign and advised Senator Marco Rubio's 2016 presidential bid. He was a member of the Social Security Advisory Board and served as a senior appointee at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services during the George W. Bush Administration.
